You spend most the time on the golf green reading the line from your golf ball to the hole, and what good is that if you don't make the putt. not because you read the line wrong but because you mis hit the ball off center. Using a line on your golf ball not only helps you set up and read the line but it lets you know if you hit it correctly. If you mis hit the ball off center of the club face, the line on the ball will wiggle instead of rolling straight along the line. This will cause the ball to roll off center and mis the hole. Without the line on the golf ball you cannot tell if you mis read the putt or if you mis hit the putt. If you have hit the ball correctly and in the center of the club face the ball will roll smoothly along that line towards the hole, you can now tell that you hit the ball correctly.
